BISD students learn teamwork and tradition at Little Lion Olympics

The Brownwood Independent School District hosted the 6th Annual Little Lion Olympics for all 3rd graders on May 18 and all 4th and 5th graders on May 19 at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Approximately 750 students participated in the junior track meet. The meet centered around the “Olympics” and featured events such as the javelin throw, long jump, the strong man tug-of-war, and various running events including relays. The opening ceremony began with each team carrying their original flag and participating in many of the Olympic Opening Ceremony traditions.

“An event this size requires a lot of team work and support,” noted Brownwood Intermediate Coach, Stefenia Phipps. “All schools, (Brownwood Intermediate, Coggin Elementary, Woodland Heights, East, and Northwest) have to work closely together to get students and teachers organized. All PE teachers and principals prepare students for their events and for all of the festivities of the day. The support staff at each school is invaluable for sending out communication to teachers and students. The S.H.A.C (School Health Advisory Committee) members do a great job of generating ideas to make Little Lion Olympics bigger and better each year. Community support is so important. We would also like to thank our parent volunteers and Jr. High and High School coaches who help make the day of the track meet a success.”

“The Little Lion Olympics prepares students to become future athletes, encourages them to get involved in activities to stay healthy and learn the importance of teamwork and Olympic traditions,” added Phipps. “The benefits of track and field are endless. The more students we can get excited about track and field at an early age the more it will benefit all Brownwood programs.”
