Fellowship of Christian Athletes Honors Local Athletes, Coaches

The Brownwood chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes honored 16 students and three coaches from Brownwood High School as FCA All-Stars.  The event was held at Gordon Wood Stadium on Friday, May 22.

Brownwood FCA Representative Kurt Newton, a member of the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions, explained the selection process.  The FCA selects the coaches for the All-Star game in each of several different sports:  football, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, and golf.  The coaches  nominate the student-athletes, then the coaches draft their teams.

Newton said that the all-star games are fun, but the important part of the event is the opportunity for the FCA to minister to the students during the three days prior to the game.  The students are selected for their athletic ability and character, but “we tell the coaches, pick a kid who needs what we have to offer.”  Every year many students do respond to the FCA message, Newton said.

Unfortunately this year the all-star games were cancelled, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so the opportunity to minister to the students was lost.  But Newton is proud of the Brownwood FCA chapter, having grown from 6-8 students to 45-50 now.

The FCA will honor students from Early and Bangs in the coming weeks.  The Brownwood FCA All-Stars are listed below.
