Charles M. Smith, 86, of Lohn

Charles M. Smith, age 86, of Lohn, died Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.

A memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.  The public is invited to attend, but the family encourages everyone to view the service via the live stream for your safety. He was born Charles Malloy Smith on August 13, 1934 in Ferris, Texas to E. Frank Smith and Catherine Wilcher Smith.  Charles grew up in Ferris, New Orleans, and Channelview.  After graduating high school, Charles became a truckdriver and farrier. Charles would work 16-to-20-hour days driving a truck and then tending to his farrier business.  He then worked for Houston Power and Light and retired after 27 years of service.  In 1994, Charles moved to Coleman County from Channelview where he worked on his farm raising cattle and hunting.  He married Frances Slayton in 1997 in Waldrip.  Charles loved being outdoors working on his farm and enjoyed the company of others.  He loved his family and spending as much time with them as possible.  Charles attended the First Baptist Church in Santa Anna and was a member of the Channelview Masonic Lodge #1304.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald Wilcher Luis Smith; one son, Mark Smith; and grandson, G.J. Montgomery; and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Fran Smith of Lohn; one son, Kelly Smith and wife Melanie of Conroe; two daughters, Jenny Sue Brown of Crosby, and Becky Wood and husband Ramsey Garza of Dripping Springs; one stepson, Mike Montgomery and wife Denise of Santa Anna; his grandchildren, Jace, Spencer, Ben, Jennifer, Dustin, Casey, Crystal, Mike, Shannon, Ashli, Adonna, Justin and Jefflin; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

As Christ grafts believers into the family of God, Charles graft friends into his family.  Charles said, “Friends are the family we choose.”  Charles is also survived by Dicky and Mary, Kim and Patty, Randy and Susan, Jim and Karren, Rick and Linda, Ray and Kay, and Kenny and Linda and the children of these couples who know Charles as Paw Paw.
