The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Wednesday morning:

On Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at approximately 12:15 a.m. Officers James Holdar and Waylon Klutts initiated a traffic stop on a red SUV in the 1600 block of Shaw Dr.

Officer Holdar approached the driver’s side door and began speaking with the driver and passenger through the driver’s side rear window. It was stated that the driver’s window would not roll down. The driver refused to identify himself nor provide proof of a driver’s license. Officer Holdar continued to speak with the driver to ascertain identifying information while the front passenger identified herself without issue.

After several minutes, the driver was asked to exit the vehicle so officers could better understand and communicate with him. The driver then put the vehicle in gear and fled the stop. As the driver turned eastbound onto Avenue K, he slowed and the passenger was allowed to exit the vehicle.

Officer Holdar continue to pursue the fleeing vehicle and traveled through the eastern and southern parts of the city limits. The pursuit lasted for approximately 11 minutes and covered over 6 miles. In the area of Southgate and River Oaks Dr., the vehicle began driving in a circle through the roads and alleys. Eventually, the vehicle came to a stop in front of 1702 Southgate and the driver exited the vehicle and began running on foot beside this residence.  Officers continued to pursue the driver as he circled this residence then ran through an open garage door into the home.

Officers located the driver in the kitchen of the home where he began to yell and argue with officers and resist their attempts to detain him.  The suspect was detained and identified as 55-year-old Ruben Gonzales. It was also confirmed at this time that the residence did belong to Gonzales. During a search of Gonzales’ vehicle, approximately 1.85 grams of suspected methamphetamine was located along with a glass smoking pipe.

This incident was further investigated and, at its conclusion, Gonzalez was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1, Evading Arrest/Detention with a Vehicle, Evading Arrest/Detention (on foot), Resisting Arrest/Detention, and Driving While License Invalid W/Previous Convictions.
