Andrea’s Legacy, a nonprofit organization in Texas honoring public school teachers and youth mentors, awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship to a Bangs Middle School teacher at the school Tuesday.
Norma Romero, Chairman of the Board for the organization, presented Lakrisha Newton with a $1000.00 check in recognition of her work at the school and dedication to her students. Newton teaches seventh-grade mathematics.
“Newton is an example of all our teachers who care about the well-being of their students both inside and outside of the classroom,” said Romero.
Andrea’s Legacy honors Andrea Romero, an elementary public school teacher who lost her life to cancer. She contracted Lupus at an early age.  Despite her illness, she graduated from Brownwood High School and the Univerity of North Texas with a teaching degree. She lost both her kidneys but continued teaching while on dialysis treatment. Andrea’s Legacy recognizes one or more Texas public teachers or youth mentors yearly. It conducts small fund-raisers and asks for donations from the public throughout the year.
