Rufus Wilson passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on July 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service will be held at Throckmorton Church of Christ on September 6, 2025 at 1:00 PM

Rufus lived a life marked by service, love, and quiet wisdom. Born in Haleyville, Alabama on September 15, 1933 to Mattie Ray and John Wesley Wilson. Rufus grew up in a large southern family. Born and raised in Alabama tradition he was an avid, lifetime supporter of the Crimson Tide. He graduated from Haleyville High School and enlisted in the US Air Force, which took him around the world to various Air Force Base stations as well as serving in the Vietnam War. While stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base, he met the love of his life- Bonnie Bundy. On April 3, 1956, Rufus and Bonnie married in Wichita Falls, Texas. To everyone else she was known as “Mom” or eventually “Mamaw,” but to Rufus she was always his “Bushel.” Their marriage of 69 years was a true testament to love, commitment, and devotion. He loved her more than anything in this world, and together they built a family and a legacy that will carry on for generations. They had three sons Barry, Mark, and John who each mirror part of Rufus in their own way. After many moves with the Air Force, they settled in Throckmorton, Texas in summer of 1974 where they planted deep roots.

A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he served his country with courage and loyalty, retiring after a distinguished career. Following his military service, he continued his dedication to duty by working over 25 years in the United States Postal Service. He was disciplined yet gentle, strong but humble—and a bman who taught by example more than words.

To his family, Rufus was more than just a husband, father, grandfather; he was a steady presence and a source of love. Some of the sweetest memories were found in the small, ordinary moments: sitting on his back porch listening to the Texas Rangers game, afternoons spent in the kitchen with his granddaughter, or cheering on Alabama yelling “Roll Tide” with each first down.

Rufus will be remembered for his storytelling, his humor, and the way he found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. Besides home with his loved ones, the golf course was his favorite place to be. His presence brought comfort, his smile lit up any room, his wisdom offered guidance, and his love left an imprint that will never fade.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie Ray and John Wesley; his brothers Lacy, Leroy, and Billie Ray (his best friend); and his sisters Hazel, Pauline, and Lucille.

He is survived by his beloved wife Bonnie; his sisters Johnnie and Doris Jean, lovingly known as “Red”; three sons: Barry (Tina), Mark (Leslie), John (Linda), nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom will continue to carry his memory forward.

As Rufus takes his well-earned rest, his family takes comfort in knowing he has reunited with his parents, siblings, and loved ones who went before him, and that together they now watch over those still here, until the day they meet again.
