Brownwood City Council approves May 7 special election

By Rick Phelps
After several years of discussion regarding the abolition of the Brownwood Economic
Development Corporation, the council unanimously approved a special election to be held May 7 during
their Tuesday morning meeting.
The purpose of the election will be for voters to adopt or reject a proposed proposition to
terminate the Brownwood Economic Development Corporation and the abolition of its sales and use tax
for the promotion and development of new and expanded business enterprises at the rate of one-half of
one percent, and concurrently, authorize the creation of the City of Brownwood Municipal Development
District.
Mayor Stephen Haynes stated if approved, the establishment of a Multi Development District
(MDD) would not force any additional taxes to the citizens. An MDD can fund all projects-primarily the
creation or retention of primary jobs related to industry and manufacturing, as well as community
projects such as parks, convention facilities, affordable housing and retail projects.
In other business Tuesday morning, the council:
Accepted a bid for a 218 acre agricultural lease at 202 FM 45 West
Approved a three-month agreement with Wayne Clark to trap and remove hogs from the Pecan
Station property
Approved a revised Economic Development Incentive agreement between the Brownwood
Economic Development Corporation and Leeco Energy and Investments
