In the fall of last year, the Early Police Department applied for a grant through the NRA Foundation to purchase new shotguns for the patrol officers in the department. The current shotguns in the department are old, with many needing to be retired.
Earlier this year, the department received a call that a grant for $2,600 was received, which will allow for the purchase of five new shotguns. The new shotguns were received this week. Chief David Mercer said the new guns will be an asset to the department. Once qualification has been achieved, they will be placed into the patrol cars. The old shotguns that are still useable will be converted to less lethal weapons and be used to deploy bean bag rounds when needed in certain circumstances.
