On Saturday, May 6, 2023, Pat McShan peacefully departed this earthly life to be in heaven with the love of his life, Roberta James McShan.  He passed away at home at the age of 90.

Pat Parker McShan was born on January 8, 1933 in Brady, Texas to Patrick Clarence McShan and Myrtle Isabell Parker.    He graduated from Brady High School in 1951 where he was Drum Major for the Brady High School marching band.  He then received a bachelor’s degree in Music from Howard Payne University in 1955.

He was in the United States Naval Reserve before meeting Roberta James at the July Jubilee in Brady and after a short courtship, they were married on March 29, 1956 in Bangs. They moved to Menard, where he was the high school band director.  He enrolled in the University of Texas School of Pharmacy in 1958, but soon decided that was not the career he wanted to pursue.  After coming back to Brownwood in 1959, he went to work at King Music Company, where he continued to work and then obtained part-ownership until his retirement in 2008.

Anyone who knew Pat, knew his love for music.  He told anyone who asked, that music was his life. While at King Music Company, he not only sold and repaired instruments, but he also coordinated and retained judges for the State Stage Band Festival that was held at Brownwood High School.  Jazz bands from all over Texas would compete in the competition.

He played in many jazz and western bands through the years but gave up playing at live music venues to be at home with his wife and young children.  After the children left home, he began playing as a hobby again with several local musicians.  He joined Kelly Spinks and the Miles of Texas in the early 1990s where he played guitar and sang vocals for the Western Swing and traditional country band.  In recent years, he enjoyed leading the singing of hymns in his Sunday school class at First Baptist Church of Brownwood.

Through the years, Pat was involved in the community by being a member of Lion’s Club, Rotary Club and he was a volunteer at Meals on Wheels. He also loved spending time at the family farm and tending to his cattle in Trickham, Texas.

Pat was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta; his father Patrick Clarence McShan of Brady and mother, Myrtle Parker McShan of Brady;  his sisters, Lillian Cobb of Kingsland, Nadine Oates of Brady and Hazel Rutherford of Georgetown.

He is survived by his two children, Cindy and husband Kelly Hoffman of Austin and Pat Jr. and wife Shannon McShan of Brownwood: his six grandchildren, Erica Negrete and husband Adrian of Burleson, Chase McShan and wife Dana of Midland, Libby Harris and husband Joe of New Braunfels, Leah Hoffman of Austin, Vance McShan of Houston, and Lydia Hoffman of Austin.

His ten great-grandchildren are Jared, Christian, Parker, Caleb, Gwyneth, Adriana, Perry, Clark, Oliver and Miles.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 12, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Brownwood.  Burial will follow in the Trickham Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to First Baptist Church of Brownwood or Trickham Cemetery Association.
