AUSTIN – Goldthwaite Eagle sophomore Walt Thompson has secured his second Class 2A boys golf state championship in as many seasons.

Due to heavy rains at Lions Municipal Course Tuesday, the second round of the 36-hole, two-day tournament was canceled, and Monday’s results determined the final standings.

Thompson fired a 68 on Monday, which wound up earning him the state championship by one stroke over silver medalist Ty Chrisman of Centerville (69) and two shots over bronze medalist Zack Armes of New Home (70).

As a freshman, Thompson turned in rounds of 70 and 74 for a 144 total and a one-stroke victory at the same venue.

In the team standings, San Saba came in ninth after Monday’s 348 composite score. Competing for the Armadillos were Winton Lackey (80), Shooter Wright (87), Sterling Proffitt (90), Skyler Romero (91), and Kolton Pierce (94).

Sonora (314) won the team state championship followed by Lipan (317) and Mildred (317).
