The Brownwood High School Cheerleaders earned multiple accolades at the week-long Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp at Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, which concluded Wednesday.
The crowning achievements came on Wednesday’s final day as the BHS cheerleaders were named Champion on Camp Cheer, received the Superior Mascot Award, and were Runner-Ups on Camp Dance and Overall Spirit.
Earning All-American accolades for Brownwood were seniors Kynlie Lewis, Jade Ortega, Nicholett Evans and Maicy Buchanan, juniors Hadley Johnson, Anslee Moses and Mya McVicker, sophomore Destiny Long (aka Leo the Lion), and freshman Bellah Stokes.
The BHS cheerleaders were awarded the Spirit Stick on the first day of competition Sunday.
Then on Monday, the Brownwood cheerleaders earned the Spirit Banana, mascot Leo the Lion received the Spirit Pickle, freshman Bellah Stokes was the Jump Off Winner, Destiny Long (aka Leo the Lion) received the Spirit Stick, and Mya McVicker and Jensyn Espinosa were Pin It Forward Winners, which is picked by other squad members. Also, Brownwood earned Superior Blue status for sideline cheer.
The “UCA Banana Award,” also known as the “Top Banana,” is the highest spirit honor given at Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camps. It’s awarded to a single squad on each day of camp—or overall for a multi-day session—that demonstrates exceptional:
• Leadership
• School/community spirit
• Teamwork and support of others
• Respect, integrity, and a positive attitude
In essence, it’s granted to the team that goes above and beyond to uplift others and show outstanding character alongside cheer skills.
On Tuesday, Brownwood cheerleaders were again the Spirit Stick Winner, received Superior on Camp Routine recognition, earned Superior Blue status for the camp routine, and Pin It Forward honors went to Lanie Johnson and Bellah Stokes.
