Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes released the following statement following the overnight shooting incident in which the suspect perished and a Brownwood Police Officer was wounded:
Late last night, our city experienced a tragic event that placed the lives of our law enforcement officers in direct danger. An individual opened fire on Brownwood Police Officers in a series of targeted and deliberate attacks. Our officers returned fire and halted the attack. The shooter received medical attention on scene and was later pronounced deceased.
One officer was injured in the shooting and is in stable condition. The officer is receiving medical care and is expected to make a good recovery. The officer’s name is being withheld at this time, but all officers and personnel involved in the event will be recognized at the appropriate time.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to the Brownwood Police Department for their courage under fire. Their swift and professional response prevented further harm and protected our community in an incredibly dangerous situation. We are also thankful for the assistance provided by the Brownwood Fire Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Early Police Department, Department of Public Safety Troopers, EMS teams, and partner organizations.
Please join me in praying for the full recovery of our injured officer and for the strength and well-being of all who were involved in last night’s events. We are grateful beyond words for their service.
In Brownwood, we are blessed with dedicated public servants who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe. We stand united in support of our law enforcement officers, and we will continue to ensure they have the resources, respect, and recognition they so rightly deserve.”
-Mayor Stephen E. Haynes
