
ABILENE – The Brownwood Lady Lions volleyball team picked up its first win of the season and the Kristen Grimes coaching era Friday, posting a 1-2 record during the first day of the Abilene Bev Ball Classic.
The Lady Lions knocked off host Abilene Cooper in straight sets, 25-22, 25-20, while also falling to Wall, 25-17, 25-9 and Boerne Champion. 25-16, 25-14.
In the victory over Cooper, Aniah Hines registered a team-best eight kills followed by six from Hannah Deen, three from Demayha Hooker, and two each from Kaydence Chandler and Camryn Gipson.
Icess Hall dished out 20 assists while Maddi Scott contributed one.
Scott, Chandler and Jentry Coalson each served two aces and Deen tacked on one.
Defensively, Hines chalked up 11 digs along with six from Scott, four from Coalson, two from Hall and one by Sara Stubblefield.
At the net, Hall and Hooker logged Brownwood’s blocks.
Against Wall, who the Lady Lions will host on Sept. 5, Deen, Hooker and Hines each finished with two kills, and Coalson served the lone ace. Hall distributed five assists and Coalson was credited with one.
Defensively, Hines’ 10 digs led the team followed by six each from Scott and Deen, three from Hall and one from Green.
Chandler notched a team-high two blocks and Hooker, Deen, Hines and Ashantia Green secured one each.
The match against Boerne Champion featured three kills from Chandler, two each from Deen, Hooker and Hines, and Hall with one.
Hall also collected eight assists while Lanie Johnson added one.
Deen, Hines, Chandler and Hall each served an ace.
On the defensive end, Deen recorded four digs with two apiece coming from Johnson, and Hall, and Hines and Bellah Stokes contributing one each.
Hines and Stokes each recorded a block for Brownwood.
The Lady Lions (1-3) will conclude tournament action Saturday, beginning with a 9 a.m. contest against Sweetwater at Abilene Cooper.
