After working for the Brownwood Independent School District for 31 years, Athletic Director Mitch Moore announced Tuesday he will retire at the end of the 2025-26 school year.
Moore has served in the role of athletic director since January 2025.
“I’ve always had a plan, and my wife, Julie, and I were reviewing our plan in early November and discussing it with our three grown children,” Moore said. “I don’t have another job lined up, I enjoy what I do, and I definitely love Brownwood ISD. I’ve spent my entire career here, but we’re going to welcome grandchild No. 5 in April and it just became apparent to me that it was time for me to be available outside of Brownwood ISD. Being available for Julie, my kids and my grand kids a little more, I’m really looking forward to that time. I might be in East Texas and West Texas a little more than Central Texas.”
A 1986 graduate of Brownwood High School, Moore returned to his roots in 1995 and first served as a middle school math teacher. He then moved to the high school in 2000 and coached freshman football and was the boys assistant soccer coach. Moore then became the boys head soccer coach and offensive coordinator for football, before moving into an administrative role. Since his days as a coach, Moore has served as assistant high school principal, high school principal, assistant superintendent and athletic director.
Moore has either played for or coached/worked with every Brownwood head football coach since the Gordon Wood era, with the exception of Mark Batchel – Wood, Randy Allen, W.T. Stapler, Steve Freeman, Bob Shipley, Chuck Howard, Kyle Maxfield, Sammy Burnett and Jeryl Brixey. Moore did play for Bachtel when he was an assistant coach at Brownwood.
“I’ve been involved with Brownwood schools for 44 years,” Moore said. “There’s 31 years as a coach and 13 as a student. That’s quite a run, several decades. Through all the ups and downs of the athletic world, we have some really good coaches in place right now and some really good facilities that are going to finish up this summer. I didn’t want to wait until the summer to say I’m done because I feel like this is the time to hire a new athletic director.”
Brownwood ISD has started the process of searching for Moore’s successor in the role of athletic director, with no timetable set for securing a replacement.
“I’ll help with the transition in any way I can,” Moore said. “The job is athletic director only, they will not be the assistant superintendent. The job has been posted and those interested in the job will be contacting (Superintendent) Dr. (Joe) Young. I’m excited for the future of Brownwood ISD and Brownwood ISD athletics, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter for me. I really don’t have a plan, but I’m sure God will take care of me. He always has, and I feel like it’s His timing on this to go ahead and make a change.”
Moore will give additional details on his decision to retire on the Brownwood Lions Coaches Show at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on KOXE.
