MINERAL WELLS – The No. 8 Brownwood Lady Lions showed no ill effects from their first loss since Dec. 4, and a seven-day weather layoff, as they started the second half of District 6-4A action by sweeping the Mineral Wells Lady Rams, 51-17, Thursday.

“We’ve gotten used to some changes to the schedule in district with games getting moved,” said Lady Lions head coach Heather Hohertz. “We were fortunate enough to be able to get in the gym this week and the girls were itching to get back on the court tonight and obviously with their play and what the scoreboard says they were ready to go.”

The Lady Lions (25-4, 5-1) – who defeated Mineral Wells by a 47-27 count in the first meeting – held the Lady Rams (15-15, 1-5) scoreless in the first period of the rematch en route to an 11-0 lead that grew to 27-5 at halftime and stood at 39-10 after three quarters.

“We watched film from the first game and our defense wasn’t really that great,” Hohertz said. “We were off on our rotation, we didn’t have a lot of communication, we stood a lot, and that’s what we talked about yesterday at practice. I told them before the game to leave no doubt, go out there and play like you’re supposed to play, play like you’re capable of playing, and everything will take care of itself, and it did.”

Brownwood shot 44 percent (20 of 45) from the floor and 29 percent (5 of 17) from three-point land, but sank just 29 percent (5 of 17) of it free throws. The Lady Lions also pulled down 28 rebounds, recorded 12 steals and coughed up only eight turnovers.

Leading the charge for the Lady Lions was Jentry Coalson with 11 points, Nylah Hall and Trinity Roberts with 10 apiece, Hannah Deen and Icess Hall with six each, Jaidyn Hope with four, and Jade Morin and Lanie Johnson with two points apiece.

Mineral Wells received six points from Jentry Jeter, four from Addyson Moore, three from Aniya Richardson, and two points apiece from Maria Calvillo and Mia Chavira.

The Lady Lions are back in action at 5:45 p.m. Friday as they host Glen Rose (18-13, 3-2) in a rematch of Brownwood’s 35-27 road victory on Jan. 13.

“Glen Rose isn’t playing Graham tonight, they’re not playing until Saturday, so they’re going to be a fresh bunch ready for us,” Hohertz said. “Coach Ramsey does a a great job over there and I’m sure they already have a good game plan going in for us. We just have to play to our ability, don’t force things, take what the defense gives us and make sure we can get some tips on balls, pressure, and get out and run in transition.”

Thursday’s win also gave Brownwood a three-game lead over Stephenville (17- 11, 2-4) – a 53-40 loser to No. 3 Brock (22-5, 6-0) Thursday – with four games left in the race for the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds from District 6-4A for the 4A Division I playoffs.
