STEPHENVILLE – The Brownwood Lions scored the first seven points of the second period to draw even with the Stephenville Yellow Jackets at 15, then yielded the next 20 points and never recovered in a 79-43 District 6-4A boys basketball loss Tuesday night.

“A couple big for us were to be tough, especially on the glass, and to take care of the ball and I don’t think we did either very well for the course of the game,” said Lions first-year head coach Jorden Young. “This is that Brownwood of old that we’ve seen where in spurts it looks good, but over the course of the game we just didn’t sustain that intensity that we’ve played with the past couple of games.”

The Lions (11-16, 1-5) – who fell by an 81-39 count to Stephenville (26-3, 4-2) in the league opener – trailed 15-8 after one quarter, 31-15 at halftime, and 48-33 through three periods.

“Stephenville’s a well coached team, they’re very good, and they’re real handsy and put a lot of pressure on you,” Young said. “That’s been our weakness, pressure and being able to handle the ball. That’s somewhere we have to grow and improve to finish out the rest of the this year.”

Cannon Calvert again paced Brownwood with 17 points trailed by Judson Coalson with seven, Jordan Gilbert with six, Elias Perez and Carson Noe with five points apiece, and Durham Brown contributed three points.

The Lions will next host Graham (17-13, 2-4) at 7:15 p.m. Friday in what will serve as the Senior Night contest. Brownwood lost the first meeting at Graham by a 59-35 count.
