Ernest Rolland Chapman, Jr., affectionately known as Ernie, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, in Coleman, Texas, at the age of 74. Born on August 3, 1951, in Odessa, Texas, Ernie spent much of his life in the city where he was raised and educated. After graduating from Odessa High School, he continued his studies and earned a bachelor’s degree, reflecting a lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.
Ernie dedicated many years of service to Warren Cat in Odessa as a diesel mechanic, showcasing his mechanical prowess and strong work ethic. In 2002, he made the significant decision to move to Novice, Texas, where he embraced the joy of retirement. During this time, Ernie took on the role of Fire Chief for the Novice Volunteer Fire Department.
His service extended beyond his professional life, as Ernie served honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. This period of his life shaped his character and instilled in him a profound sense of duty and commitment. Ernie’s passions included his fervent support for the Dallas Cowboys, a team he cheered for with unmatched enthusiasm. He also enjoyed target shooting, a hobby that brought him both relaxation and satisfaction.
In 1993, he married the love of his life, Donna Kay Maxwell, in Odessa, creating a partnership that enriched his life until her passing. Together, they built a family and a legacy rooted in love and togetherness. Their bond was one of deep respect and admiration, and their shared experiences became cherished memories.
Ernie is survived by his children, Jeff Chapman, Mikki Chapman and Kimberly Ann Teal. He was a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren, including raising Danny Michael McKinzie, II as a son, and James Snyder. These relationships formed the core of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Rolland Chapman, Sr. and Christine Smith Chapman; his beloved wife, Donna Kay Chapman; and his brother, Donny T. Chapman. Each of these individuals played a significant role in shaping who Ernie was, and their memories will live on through the stories shared by those who loved him.
