As spring storm season approaches, the Brown County Office of Emergency Management is reminding all residents that the county’s emergency alert system remains non-operational. Until the new system is fully implemented, citizens are urged to ensure they have reliable, alternative methods to monitor weather conditions and receive urgent safety information.
“Severe weather is common this time of year, and it is essential that every household has at least one dependable way to stay informed,” said Joel Kelton, County Judge Pro Tem. “While we are moving as quickly as possible to restore countywide alert capability, we want our residents to be prepared in the meantime.”
Recommended Weather Monitoring Options
Residents are encouraged to utilize one or more of the following resources:
• NOAA Weather Radios with battery backup
• Trusted weather apps with emergency alerts enabled
• Local TV and radio broadcasts
• National Weather Service alerts (weather.gov)
New Emergency Alert System Coming Soon
The county is currently in the final stages of selecting a new emergency alert system that will enhance communication capabilities and improve public safety during emergencies.
Once the selection and implementation processes are complete, the county will announce activation dates and provide instructions on how residents can participate and receive alerts.
“We understand how important this service is for our community,” Kelton said. “The new system will be a major improvement, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we work to bring it online.”
For updates, residents can follow official county communication channels, including the county website or contact the Emergency Management Office directly at 325-643-2828.
