ABILENE – The Brownwood Lions reached double figures twice Friday on the way to a pair of victories over Abilene Cooper and Arlington Sam Houston at the Abilene baseball tournament.

First, the Lions chalked up a 13-8 triumph over Cooper on the Cougars’ home turf.

Trailing 2-1 after two innings, the Lions grabbed a 4-2 lead in the top of the third that increased to 8-2 in the fourth, but Cooper crept within 8-7 in the bottom of the fourth. Brownwood answered with a second straight four-run frame to reclaim a 12-7 advantage, and each team added one run the rest of the way.

The Lions finished with a dozen hits, led by four from Robbie Robinson – who tripled, doubled and collected four RBIs. Garrett Wilkerson chipped in three hits, including a double, with an RBI. Carter Massey added a pair of singles, Shaxton Simpson recorded a base hit and two RBIs, Blayne Stegemoller finished with one hit and one RBI, and Hunter Sweaney also singled. Cannon Calvert and Calder Damron each contributed an RBI apiece without a hit.

On the mound, Logan Flores picked up the win, working 3.2 innings with seven runs allowed on seven hits with four walks. Stegemoller pitched 2.1 innings and yielded one unearned run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk. The Brownwood defense committed just one error.

Brownwood’s run in the first inning was the result of a lead-off single by Robinson, then courtesy-runner Aden Smith scored on a wild pitch.

The Lions surged in front for good with a three-run third as Robinson doubled with one out, Simpson walked and Sweaney was plunked by a pitch to load the bases. Smith, again running for Robinson, scored on another wild pitch ahead of an RBI sacrifice fly from Calvert that plated Simpson with the go-ahead run. Wilkerson then singled home Sweaney.

In the four-run fourth Massey singled, Flores was hit by a pitch and Damron walked to fill the sacks, while an RBI sacrifice fly from Wooten brought home Massey. Robinson followed with a two-RBI triple that scored Preston Cook, courtesy-running for Flores, and Damron. Simpson’s RBI sac bunt back to the mound plated Robinson.

Brownwood’s four-run fifth frame featured a lead walk by Wilkerson, a single from Massey and an RBI single by Stegemoller. With two outs, Robinson singled home Cook, now running for Stegemoller, and Massey ahead of an RBI single by Simpson that brought home Robinson.

The last run from the Lions in the sixth inning came from Damron’s RBI sacrifice fly that plated Wilkerson, who singled to start the frame.

The Lions followed by doubling up Arlington Sam Houston, 12-6, at Abilene High Friday night.

Even at 2 after one inning, Brownwood produced consecutive five-run frames to race out to a 12-2 lead. Sam Houston tacked on single runs in the third and sixth innings, and two more in the fourth.

Brownwood compiled 13 hits – three, including a home run, by Calvert, who drove in three; two singles and two RBIs from Simpson; a pair of singles from Massey; a double and two RBIs from Sweaney; a single and a pair of RBIs from Wooten; one hit and one RBI from Damron; and a single from Escobar.

On the hill, Daylyn Ansons tossed five innings to notch the win, allowing five runs – one earned, as the Lions committed five errors – on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Wilkerson hurled an inning of relief, giving up one unearned run on no hits with one strikeout.

The Lions grabbed a 2-0 lead in top of the first inning as Robinson led off with a double and scored on Simpson’s RBI single, then Calvert ripped a solo shot to left field with two outs.

Brownwood opened a 7-2 advantage in the top of the second as Massey singled and Escobar walked to start the frame, and Damron put the Lions up for good with an RBI single to plate Massey. Wooten then singled home both Damron and Escobar to push the lead to 5-2. Wooten later came home from third on the back end of a double steal with Simpson, who reached via error, and Calvert plated Simpson with an RBI single.

The lead ballooned to 12-2 in the top of the third as Massey again led off with a base hit and Escobar reached on one of two Sam Houston errors. With two outs, Robinson singled home Massey, then Simpson followed with an RBI base hit to plate Wooten, who reached via fielder’s choice. A two-RBI triple from Sweaney followed, which scored Robinson and Simpson, then Calvert singled home Sweaney to cap the Brownwood scoring.

During the four tournament games, the Lions batted .398 as a team and generated 34 runs. Standouts included Robinson, who batted .769 during the tournament with seven singles, two doubles, a triple and five RBIs; Wilkerson, who hit .545 with five singles and a double; Sweaney, who batted .417 with three singles, two triples and seven RBIs; Simpson, who hit .417 with five singles and four RBIs; Calvert, who batted .400 with a home run, three singles and five RBIs; and Massey tallied a .385 batting average with five singles.
