In their final action before the start of postseason play, the District 5-4A soccer co-champion Brownwood Lady Lions got back in the win column with a 6-0 thrashing of Lake Worth, the second-place team from District 8-4A, Thursday at Gordon Wood Stadium.
Four different Lady Lions (16-3-1) accounted for six goals – two each from Nylah Hall and Kynlie Lewis, and one apiece by Kynlee Jefferson and Nixon Johnson – to pace the attack against Lake Worth (11-9-2).
“The girls were ready to get back on the field after the Stephenville game and I’m glad they came in with a positive attitude and ready to get after it,” said Lady Lions head coach Alexis Walker. “This was a great game for us to go into the playoffs.”
It took Brownwood until 19:08 remained into first half to score – as Hall found the net unassisted – but the Lady Lions tacked on two more goals before intermission as Jefferson scored unassisted at the 11:27 mark and Johnson’s header off a corner kick from Alayna Hernandez with 91 seconds before intermission increased the advantage to 3-0.
“With this being a playoff warm-up, we needed to play today exactly how we’re going to play next Thursday and it took us a little bit longer to get started,” Walker said. “That’s something we addressed at halftime.”
The Lady Lions required just 5:19 to start the second-half scoring as Lewis scored off an assist from Hall. Then, with 26:34 remaining, Hall notched her second goal with an assist from Bella Garza, and Lewis capped the scoring with 23:14 to go thanks to an assist from Ailean Palacios.
“It’s important that we can all move the ball and all put the ball in the back of the net, it doesn’t need to be one person all the time,” Walker said. “To be able to do that and play as a team and cheer others on when they’re having success, that’s huge for us. A team mentality going into the playoffs is definitely something in our favor.”
The defense didn’t receive much of a test from Lake Worth, as Brownwood dominated possession throughout.
“They don’t get a lot whole of praise, their names aren’t always mentioned, but the defense keeps us in every single game,” Walker said. “We wanted to get out of here with a clean slate, no goals against us. They’re the heartbeat of our team, they’re able to see the whole field and they did an excellent job talking and communicating with their teammates, which is another positive going into the playoffs.”
The Lady Lions will start their postseason run at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19 in Mineral Wells, when they battle Venus (12-9-1) – the third-place team from District 6 – in the Class 4A Division II Region I bi-district round of the playoffs.
“If we can utilize everything we learned today and step on the field with this kind of energy in Mineral Wells against Venus, I think it will be a good day for us,” Walker said.
