Surgery, recovery, trip to jail

A Brownwood man is currently jailed on bonds totaling $240,000 stemming from an incident that saw Jason Coffey, 36, arrested on allegations that he kidnapped his girlfriend and her son and stabbed the girlfriend’s father. The formal charges were two counts of aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault against family with a weapon and an unrelated out-of-county warrant for assault family violence with previous convictions.

In information provided by the Brownwood Police Department, officers responded to the 1500 block of Davis Lane around 7 p.m. Saturday night for a welfare check. Officers were asked to make contact with a woman and her 16-year-old son, but were initially unsuccessful. As the officers were leaving the area, they heard screaming coming from that same area and observed several people standing in a breezeway yelling. One of the officers on the scene recognized Coffey because of the outstanding warrant.

Coffey was arrested on the warrant and officers observed a man bleeding from his head and stomach. After further investigation, officers discovered Coffey had been holding his girlfriend and her son against their will since the previous day. At one point, Coffey exited the apartment and began assaulting his girlfriend’s father, including stabbing him with a knife.

The girlfriend’s father was taken to Brownwood Regional Medical Center to be treated for multiple stab wounds, while Coffey was also transported to BRMC to undergo emergency surgery to repair damage to his right hand. After surgery and recovery, Coffey was taken to the Brown County Jail.
