David Lee Smith went to be with his mom and dad in Heaven on June 17, 2025. No formal services are planned at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
David was born on January 15, 1956, in Amarillo, Texas (Potter County), to Patricia Rapstine Smith and Hugh Richard Smith. He grew up in Amarillo and later earned his GED.
David had a lifelong love for animals. He worked at the Amarillo Zoo and even delivered newspapers on his bicycle. He had a gentle heart and a healing touch for animals, often nursing sick or injured ones back to health.
David was unique and walked to the beat of a different drum. He was a friend to everyone he met. His journey through life included a spiritual search, and he ultimately found God. David shared a deep and enduring friendship with Frank and Lucille Scales, who babysat him in his youth and later became lifelong friends. Their connection took him to Brownwood, Texas, where he continued to share life with them.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Patricia and Hugh, his grandparents, and his beloved 4-year-old sister who passed away from leukemia. Among his dearest family members was his Grandpa Tex, with whom he shared a special bond.
David is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Kay Smith of California and Melissa Leigh Smith Perry of Brownwood. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Frank Childress, Logan Dreiling, and Christianna Childress Dreiling; and his great-granddaughter, Lyla Dreiling.
He is lovingly remembered by Melissa Perry’s family: Milton, Dana, and Micah Perry; and stepson Shane Wood.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Milton Perry for his unwavering support and friendship. Special thanks also go to Melissa’s sister, Cindy, for her quick trip home in this time of need.
David Lee Smith will be remembered for his kind heart, his love for animals, and the joy he brought to those around him.
Services entrusted to Brownwood Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at brownwoodfuneralhome.net
