This week, Howard Payne University hosted the Summer and Young Scholars programs for children entering grades K-6. The theme was “Camp Curiosity,” which focused on the exploration of ideas and learning through hands-on experiments, open-ended questioning and integrative activities.
Dr. Julie Welker, director of the Summer and Young Scholars program and professor of communication and department chair at HPU, expressed her appreciation for everyone involved in making this year’s Summer and Young Scholars a success.
“We had an amazing group of students, student assistants and instructors this year,” said Dr. Welker. “The kids learned so much and had a great time!”
The students studied subjects including physics, cell biology, ecology and art.
“Getting exposure to concepts like this at an early age is beneficial to student learning and development,” she said. “We love seeing students’ eyes opened to new knowledge and application to daily life.”
Next year’s Summer and Young Scholars program is scheduled for July 13-17, 2026. The theme for the week will be “Works & Wonders” based on Psalm 92:5. For more information, please visit www.hputx.edu/summerandyoungscholars.
