SAN ANGELO – The Brownwood Lady Lions, competing in the Class 5A-6A Division of the 66th Annual San Angelo Relays, turned in a second-place team performance Saturday, just seven points behind meet champion Amarillo – which won the 5A Region I title in 2025.

The Lady Lions garnered 129 points to the 136 for Amarillo, as winning their respective events for the Brownwood girls were Grace Sparks in the pole vault with a new school record height of 11-9, while Rebekkah Delgado brought home gold in the 400 meters in a time of 59.07, as did Hannah Deen in the high jump with best effort of 5-4.

The reigning 4A state champions in the 200 meters Kaya Phillips (24.59) and the 4×100 relay of Phillips, Icess Hall, Jade Morin and Aniah Hines (47.49) both came in second behind Class 5A competition.

Also finishing second – again trailing only Class 5A competition – was the 4×200 relay (1:40.83), comprised of the same four girls as the sprint relay, along with Delgado in the 800 meters (2:22.84) and Hall in the triple jump (35-8.5).

The Brownwood Lions, competing in the Class 4A and under draw, came in 11th place with a total of 20 points. Leading the charge for the Lions was Blayne Stegemoller, who won the discus with a distance of 132 feet even. Caven Webster added a bronze medal in the 100 meters (11.08).

Both the Lady Lions and Lions will compete in Brownwood’s Bluebonnet Relays Friday, March 20 at Gordon Wood Stadium. Action begins with the 3200 meters and field events at 10:30 a.m., with the running finals slated to begin at 4 p.m.
