Davey “David” Lee Cox, age 86, of Brownwood passed peacefully into the waiting arms of loved ones in Heaven while surrounded by family in his home on Thursday, September 10, 2020.
Funeral Services for David will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2020, at Blaylock Funeral Home Chapel with David Barnum officiating; burial with Military Honors will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Blaylock Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home of Brownwood.
David’s roots run deep in Central Texas where he lived most of his life. He was born in Clear Creek in Brown County on February 6th, 1934, to Ira and Margaret (Counts) Cox in a big two-story wood house built with wood brought by wagon from many miles away. The old homeplace was often remembered fondly and shared with his loved ones – times as a young boy hunting squirrels & rabbits on the creek, helping his father with chores, sleeping on the front porch in the summers and his mother cooking biscuits and large meals on the “wood stove”. As David grew older, he helped at a family business hauling fruit to & from New Mexico and also helped his dad at work, drilling oil wells on a cable tool rig around this area.
David joined the United States Navy as a young man where he served through the Korean War as a Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class on the USS Mispillion. David returned home after serving his country proudly, combined 2 rigs, one that belonged to his dad and another one he purchased and began drilling oil and water wells, a career he much enjoyed throughout his life. He was also a truckdriver during some of his early years, hauling for JR Beadel and for Frank’s fruit market, (his Brother) out of Odessa. He taught the boys in the family lifelong work ethics & would haul his kids around in the “doghouse” on weekends & summers while he worked. He was also a gauger on the side and enjoyed the many trips traveling around this area “packing Ira around on his back”.
For many years now David has enjoyed living south of town with his wife & on the same property as his son, Ira David; where he enjoyed deer hunting each season, fishing, gardening, bluebonnets in the springtime, watching the birds & hummingbirds & many special moments with his family thru the years. During this covid pandemic, David has especially enjoyed the time him & his wife have spent with each other talking, joking & watching some favorite shows on TV, listening to old favorite songs & eating some favorite foods prepared for him by his wife. He also spent a lot of time on the phone with his loved ones sharing memories or things they were doing in their lives. David knew how to appreciate the “little things in life” & encouraged others to do so.
Later in years in addition to loving and supporting his ever-growing family, David was deeply involved in Friendship Home with his wife, Liz, providing support, love, and guidance for at-risk girls, all of whom respected and loved him, keeping in touch for many years after.
His father, Ira Cox; dear mother, Margaret (Cox) Curbo; brother, Frank Cox; nephew, Rocky Cox; and grandson, Nathaniel Aguirre, all passed into Heaven ahead of him.
Mourning his loss are many family and friends in the community, including his wife of 39 years, Liz Cox of Brownwood; children and step-children; Ladara (Cox) Durden and husband Conley of Goliad, Maleia (Cox) Solis and husband Ray of Bangs, Ira Cox of Brownwood, Donna Taylor of Denton, Robby Taylor and wife Meg of Bowie, and Bill Taylor of Brownwood; grandchildren: Angela Leach (Eli), Christopher Leach (Leslie), Kimberly Leach (Andy), Ryan Aguirrie (Sierra), Derrick Worthen (Leslie), Michael Taylor, Kaleb Taylor, Davey Cox, Leah’Shae Martinez (Ryan), Hannah Taylor, Shane Taylor, Jean Taylor, Victor Taylor, Mallory Taylor and Nathan Cox; as well as 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived a niece, Rhonda; numerous other relatives and friends.
Throughout his long and full life, David Cox touched so many people with his strength, kindness, and generosity, mere words cannot express it here. To know David was to love him, and though he left this world too soon, he will live on in the hearts of all who shared his love. And as those of us who loved him pour our love out into the world, his legacy continues on with us. We will carry him in our heart always.
