The Texas Constitutional Amendment Election is November 7, 2023 but Early Voting in the election begins Monday, October 23rd.

“We are voting on 14 different amendments.  The most I’ve heard about that a lot of people are focusing on is Proposition 4 and Proposition 9,” said Brenda Arp, Brown County Elections Administrator.

Prop. 4 deals with increasing the amount of the exemption from ad valorem taxation by a school district on residence homesteads from $40,000 to $100,000.

Prop. 9 authorizes a cost-of-living adjustment to certain annuitants of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas.

Sample ballots and explanatory statements for each proposition are available in print from the Brown County Elections office.  You can drop by 613 North Fisk and pick them up in person, or, you can find them online by CLICKING HERE on the Brown County Elections website.

Early voting begins Monday, October 23rd and will take place at the Brown County Elections Office, just north of the courthouse.  Early voting varies by county but is usually conducted in the county courthouse through the County Clerk’s office.

In Brown County, early voting the first week, Monday, October 23rd through Friday, October 27th, will be from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Early voting October 30th, October 31st and November 1st will also be from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Early voting on Thursday, November 2nd and Friday, November 3rd, will be from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm.

On Election Day, Tuesday, November 7th, the polls will be open at all boxes in Brown County from 7am to 7pm and registered voters in Brown County can vote at any one of the polling locations.

When it comes to mail-in ballots, the ones you are using right now expire December 31st and you’ll have to re-apply for mail-in ballots for next year’s Presidential election beginning January 2, 2024.

“We have received a lot of mail-in ballots and I thought it was just for the amendments but people do not realize that these that you are submitting right now actually are only good through December 31st.  Everybody needs to re-file for a mail-in ballot January 2, 2024 to be be able to vote in the primary (March 5, 2024) and for the next year election,” said Arp.

Any questions about the amendment election or mail-in ballots can be directed to the Brown County Elections Office at 646-4333.
