Two-vehicle accident near Valera results in one fatality

One person was killed in a two-vehicle accident that took place at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21 on U.S. Highway 67 in Coleman County, 3.1 miles east of Valera.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Phillip Scott Mayfield, 48, of San Antonio perished after his 2016 Ford F-350 pick-up collided with a 1999 Freightliner truck tractor towing a 2009 Dire semi-trailer. Mayfield was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:04 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Vickie Holder.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the Ford F-350 was traveling west on US 67. The semi was traveling east on US 67. The driver of the Ford F-350 drove into the wrong side of the roadway in a no passing zone striking the semi.

The driver of the semi – Demmit Clayborne Gray, 57, of Franklin – was transported to Coleman Medical Center with Non-incapacitating injury in stable condition.

Road conditions were dry and the weather was clear.
