Estelle passed from this life on Thursday, December 7, 2023, in an Abilene hospice.

Cleata Estelle Martin was born on Turkey Creek near Cross Cut on December 7, 1924, to Pearl and William Henry Martin.  She attended the Grosvenor school.  At age 16, Estelle met her future husband, Hubert Guthrie, at a church meeting off of the Cross Plains highway.  As World War II started, Hubert left for San Diego to work in the aircraft plants in support of the war effort.  He wrote a letter to Estelle asking if she wanted to get married.  She agreed and they were married in Yuma, Arizona when she was 17.  Estelle joined Hubert in San Diego and worked alongside him as a “Rosie the Riveter.”  After the war, Hubert took a job with Texaco which took the young Guthrie family to various stops in the oil fields of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.  Upon retirement, the Guthries moved back to Brown County. Estelle was a lifelong member of the Churches of Christ with her last membership at the Bangs Church of Christ.

Estelle is survived by a son Jerry Guthrie and wife Brenda; three grandchildren, Glen Guthrie and wife Lisa, Lana Guthrie, and Jan Corley; five great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Hubert Guthrie, her parents, and a brother, Troy Martin in 1947.
