A.W. Allen, 91, of Bangs

A.W. Allen, age 91, of Bangs, formerly of Potosi, went home to Jesus on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at Holiday Hill in Coleman. Services will be by Heartland Funeral Home in Early on Thursday, April 18 with visitation from 11:30 – 12:30 PM followed by procession to Potosi Community Church for a 2:00 PM short “Going Home” service and community viewing followed by burial in Potosi Cemetery.

He was born to Parents, Arthur and Ruby Allen, on May 30, 1932, at home in south Coleman County halfway between Voss and Gouldbusk. A. W. graduated from Mozelle High School and Ranger Junior College. He was a member of the Texas National Guard before being drafted into the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War.

He and his family moved to Abilene in 1955 where he was employed by Clayton Chemical Company and the Abilene Fire Department. Later, he became self – employed with Aladdin Janitorial & Carpet Company; Abilene Pecan; and farming and ranching in the Potosi area with registered Angus and Chianina Cattle.

A. W. met and married the love of his life, Doris Miller, in 1965. They built their dream home in Potosi in 1972, and he became the first Fire Chief for the Potosi Volunteer Fire Department. He spent years working with the West Texas Fair and Rodeo serving on the Board of Directors from 1979 to 1985; and Superintendent of Breeding Sheep Department and Chianina Show from 1986 to 1994. He and Doris became Ostrich Breeders in 1989 and operated Allen Acres. He was President of the West Texas Ostrich Association and Charter Board Member of the Texas Ostrich Association; and a member of The American Ostrich Association.

A.W. was a member of The Masonic Lodge and Kiwanis Club of Abilene. He and Doris served on the boards of three Evangelists: David Ray Evangelistic Association; Boyce Evans Southwestern Evangelistic Association; and Cody Whitfil’s Summit Ministries. They were involved with Llano Estacado Emmaus and Earth Angels Reunion Group as well as Pecan Valley Emmaus.

They lived in Potosi for 37 years before they retired and moved to Lake Brownwood in 2009 becoming members of First Methodist Church and working in the Emmaus Community. They also volunteered at Good Samaritan Ministries in Brownwood and are current members of North Lake Community Church. Due to health issues, they built a small patio home in Bangs in 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Charles; and daughter, Mianne Haley.

A.W. is survived by his Wife, Doris, of 58 years; Sons, Rex Allen, and Ross Allen and wife, Lois; step-daughter, Ginna Yonkouski; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sons-in-law, Michael Haley and Dan Peterson.
