James Carson “J.C.” Mitchell passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, May 9, 2026. He was born on April 18, 1933, to Sterling Walter Mitchell and Bertie Mae Hamlett Mitchell. J.C. graduated from Brownwood High School in 1951 and married the love of his life, Patsy Ruth Seale, on October 13 of that same year. Together they built a loving home and were blessed with two children, James Sterling Mitchell and, four years later, Renee Suzanne Mitchell.
J.C. proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. Following his honorable discharge, he and Patsy returned to Fort Worth, where he began a 40-year career with Texas Electric Service Company. He served as supervisor of the meter shop, where he trained employees and oversaw the cleaning and repair of electric meters to return them to service.
Known for his remarkable handyman skills, J.C. could fix nearly anything. He loved the challenge of understanding how mechanical things worked and finding ways to repair them. Throughout his life, he generously used those talents to help countless family members, friends, churches, and neighbors.
Above all else, J.C. was a devoted Christian and family man. He was deeply involved in his children’s lives, faithfully attending football games to watch them perform in the band and serving as a chaperone on numerous band and youth choir trips. He also participated in many church mission trips, helping with construction projects wherever needed.
J.C. faithfully served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Aledo and gave countless hours to the Facilities Committees at both First Baptist Church Aledo and Acton Baptist Church, offering expert advice and hands-on help to improve church buildings and grounds. While attending Acton Baptist Church, he built furniture and fixtures for the Wee School and assisted with directing the children’s choir. He and Patsy also enjoyed traveling with their Sunday School class from Acton Baptist Church, creating cherished friendships and memories along the way. When J.C. took up woodturning, he especially enjoyed creating tops and handmade toys for the children of family and friends. In his spare time, he also enjoyed playing golf with friends from church.
J.C. was preceded in death by his father and mother, his brothers, Wilton Roy Mitchell and Lawrence Ray Mitchell. He is survived by his son, James Sterling Mitchell, and wife, Cyndi, and daughter, Renee Suzanne Mitchell Garrett, and husband, Kent. He is also survived by grandchildren Bolton Sterling Garrett and Carson Riley Garrett, Dustin Archer, and wife, Mandy, and Dylan Archer, and wife, Leah.
