Brief City Council Meeting on Proposed Property Tax Rate

The Brownwood City Council held a very short meeting Thursday morning, September 5.  They were there to hold a Public Hearing on the proposed property tax rate for the 2019-2020 fiscal year.  All members of the Council were in attendance and Mayor Stephens Haynes gaveled the meeting to order.

There were no public comments and no one appeared to address the proposed tax rate.  Being no further business, the meeting adjourned less than five minutes after it started.

“What the city is recommending is keeping the tax rate at $.7869 per $100 valuation, this is what the tax rate was last year,” said Emily Crawford, City Manager.  “Because we are receiving an additional 3.4% in tax revenue from property taxes, then we must post this as a tax rate increase although the actual rate is not increasing,” Crawford said.

The next Public Hearing on the proposed tax rate is at 9:00 am Tuesday, September 10.

The proposed tax rate will be adopted during a special called meeting on September 17 at 9:00 am on first reading and during a regular Council meeting on September 24 at 9:00 am on second and third reading.
